what does 2x4 mean on an atv

I keep seeing the term "2x4" when reading about ATVs, but I'm not entirely sure what it refers to. Does it indicate the type of drivetrain or something else? How does it compare to other drivetrain configurations like 4x4? Any clarification would be appreciated!
