what color is polaris antifreeze

Hey folks, I'm doing a routine service on my 2022 Polaris Sportsman and I'm a bit confused about the antifreeze. The bottle says it's for a Polaris engine, but the color looks more like a deep orange than the typical green I expected. Is this normal for Polaris antifreeze? I want to make sure I'm using the right type before I top off the cooling system. Has anyone noticed a color change or can confirm what the correct hue should be?

I ran into the same question last winter on my 2020 Ranger. Polaris actually uses a pink‑ish orange coolant for their newer models. It's a phosphate‑free, OAT based formula that looks brighter than the old green. As long as the label says "Polaris Antifreeze/Coolant" and the viscosity feels right, the color isn’t a safety issue. Just double‑check the part number against your manual to be safe.

I prefer to stick with the OEM stuff, but I’ve swapped to a standard Dex‑cool (green) on my 2018 Wolf. It works fine, but you have to flush the system thoroughly because mixing colors can cause sludge. The orange you see is just a dye; the performance specs are what matter. If you’re comfortable flushing, you can use any high‑quality 50/50 mix that meets ASTM D3306.

Quick safety note: never add water straight to a hot engine, regardless of coolant color. I once added a splash of orange coolant to a warm 2021 Montana and caused a bit of steam burst. Let the engine cool, then top it off. Also, make sure the caps are tight; the orange mix tends to evaporate a bit faster if the seal isn’t perfect.

I had a friend who thought the orange meant it was a premium, high‑performance coolant, but it’s really just the standard Polaris formula. The only real trade‑off is cost—Polaris brand runs a few dollars higher per gallon. If you’re on a budget, a reputable OAT coolant from a big brand will do the job, just avoid the cheap, non‑phosphate ones.

From a maintenance perspective, keep an eye on the coolant’s clarity. The orange can discolor to a milky brown if the radiator is developing a leak or if you have rust in the system. I replaced the radiator on my 2023 Sportsman after noticing that change, and the new orange coolant stayed clear for years. So, if the color looks off, it might be a sign of deeper issues.
