what oil goes in a polaris ranger rear differential

Hey folks, I just did a quick service on my 2021 Polaris Ranger and noticed the rear differential is low on oil. I’ve seen some people say to use regular 75W-90 gear oil, others recommend the Polaris OEM spec. I’m also wondering if a synthetic blend would be better for the hotter temps we see on the trails. Has anyone tried a specific brand or viscosity and noticed any difference in noise or wear? I want to make sure I’m using the right fluid so I don’t damage the diff or void the warranty. Thanks in advance!

I stick with the Polaris‑approved 75W‑90 gear oil that ships with the factory fill. It’s designed for the diff’s seals and the temperature range our Rangers see. I’ve never had a leak or any whining after a few years of service, and it keeps the warranty intact. If you can’t find the exact brand, any high‑quality 75W‑90 that meets API GL‑5 should work fine.

I actually run a synthetic 75W‑90 in my 2020 Ranger. The temps get up near 120°F on steep climbs, and the synthetic holds its viscosity better, which reduces gear whine. It’s a bit pricier, but I’ve noticed less heat buildup in the diff after long days. Just make sure the oil meets GL‑5 specs, otherwise you could damage the gears.

I tried using a multi‑grade 80W‑90 that I already had on hand, and it seemed okay at first, but after a few weeks I started hearing a low hum from the rear. I think the slightly thicker oil was putting extra load on the bearings. I went back to the recommended 75W‑90 and the noise disappeared. Stick to the spec unless you have a good reason to deviate.

One thing to watch out for is the seal condition. Even the best oil won’t stop a leak if the seal is worn. When I changed the rear diff oil, I also inspected the seals and re‑greased them with the OEM seal grease. It’s a small extra step that saved me from a nasty leak later. Also, remember to bleed the diff after filling to avoid air pockets.

If you’re looking to save a few bucks, a reputable generic 75W‑90 that meets GL‑5 will do the job. Just avoid any gear oil that’s labeled “hypoid” for differentials, as the additive package can be too harsh for the Ranger’s gears. I’ve used a few off‑brand oils without issues, but I always double‑check the spec sheet before pouring.
