what oil to use in polaris atv

Hey folks, I just broke in my 2022 Polaris Sportsman XP and I'm trying to figure out the right oil. The manual mentions 5W-30 synthetic, but I see a lot of people using regular 5W-30 or even 10W-30 for hot climates. I ride a mix of trails and sand, and I want to keep the engine happy without breaking the bank. Anyone have a favorite brand or any tweaks they make for high‑temperature riding? Also, any tips on how often to change it in my usage pattern would be appreciated!

I run Mobil 1 5W-30 synthetic in my 2021 XP and haven’t had any issues. It handles the heat from sand dunes well and the mileage is solid – I get about 120 miles between changes. I stick to the factory interval (50 hours) and do a quick drain after every season. The price is a bit higher, but the peace of mind is worth it for me.

I actually stick with a high‑quality conventional 5W-30 like Pennzoil Platinum. It’s cheaper and I’ve never seen any sludge build‑up on my 2020 Ranger. I change it a bit more often – about every 40 hours – because I think the conventional oil degrades faster in the heat. If you’re on a budget, it works fine as long as you keep up with changes.

For those riding heavy sand, I recommend a 10W-30 full synthetic such as AMSOIL. The higher weight at operating temperature helps keep the film thickness up when the engine is under load. I change it every 60 hours because the oil stays cleaner longer. Just make sure your filter is a good OEM part; a cheap filter can negate the benefits.

I’ve had a bad experience using the cheapest synthetic blends – they tend to break down quicker in the heat and I noticed a slight loss of power after a few hundred miles. Stick with a reputable brand; the difference is noticeable. Also, don’t forget to check the oil level after each ride – sand can get into the breather and cause a slight drop.

A quick tip: after the first break‑in, run a full synthetic 5W-30 for a couple of seasons, then you can switch to a semi‑synthetic if you want to save cash. I did this on my 2019 XP and the engine ran fine. Just keep an eye on any metal particles in the drain plug – if you see them, go back to full synthetic.
