what size trailer for 2 atvs

Hey folks, I’m planning a weekend trip with my buddy and we each have a 650cc ATV. We need a trailer that can handle both safely, but we also don’t want something massive that’s a nightmare to hitch. Any recommendations on the ideal size, weight capacity, and maybe a few brands that have worked for you? Also, any tips on loading and securing the ATVs would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I went with a 6'x8' utility trailer rated for 3,000 lbs. It fits my 700cc and a smaller 500cc comfortably. The key is the ramp angle – keep it shallow to avoid stressing the front suspension. I also use ratchet straps on the rear axle and a tie‑down chain on the front roll bar. It’s a bit wider than I expected, but the extra stability on the highway is worth it.

I’ve used a 5'x7' gooseneck trailer for two 600cc ATVs and love the maneuverability. The hitch is higher, so you need a longer ramp, but the gooseneck makes turning in tight spots easier. Make sure the trailer’s axle rating is at least 4,000 lbs; I’ve never had an issue with the weight distribution, but you’ll want heavy‑duty shackles for the front tie‑downs.

If you’re on a budget, a 5'x6' open trailer can work, but you’ll have to be careful about weight limits. My 2,500‑lb trailer struggled with one 650cc and a side‑by‑side, so I had to leave the cargo box at home. I recommend adding a sway control system and always double‑check the tongue weight; otherwise you’ll get a nasty wobble on the highway.

I’d suggest a 6'x9' enclosed trailer with a lift gate if you plan on hauling gear too. It’s heavier and more expensive, but the protection from weather and road debris is a huge plus. I use a 4‑point ratchet system and a lockable wheel chock. The downside is the longer length makes backing up tricky, so practice in a empty lot first.

Consider your towing vehicle’s capacity before you pick a trailer. My truck can only handle a 2,800‑lb tongue load, so I went with a 5'x7' trailer rated for 3,200 lbs and kept the ATVs light by removing the windshields. I also use a hydraulic lift to get the ATVs on board – it saves your back and speeds up loading. Just be aware the lift adds extra maintenance.
