what weight is polaris ps4 oil

Hey folks, I'm doing a quick oil change on my 2022 Polaris PS4 and I'm a bit stuck on the weight recommendation. The manual mentions 10W-30, but I've seen some people swear by 5W-30 for better cold starts. I'm riding a mix of forest trails and some rocky backroads, and temps here swing from 30°F in the mornings to 85°F midday. Anyone know if the weight really matters for the PS4's engine, or can I safely stick with the 10W-30 all season? Appreciate any tips or personal experiences!

I run 10W-30 year‑round on my 2021 PS4 and haven't had any issues. The engine tolerances are pretty forgiving, and the thicker oil helps keep the pump primed when it’s hot on those steep climbs. Just make sure you change the filter at each service. If you live in a place that regularly drops below 20°F, you might notice a rougher start, but it’s not a deal‑breaker for me.

I switched to 5W-30 for a few winters up in the mountains and loved the easier cranking in sub‑freezing temps. The lighter weight circulates faster when the engine is cold, reducing wear. However, once the bike warms up, I noticed a slight increase in oil consumption on longer rides. If you decide to go lighter, keep an eye on the oil level and top up as needed.

Safety note: whatever weight you choose, always stick to the recommended oil change interval—Polaris suggests every 50 hours or 6 months, whichever comes first. Skipping changes can cause sludge build‑up, especially with synthetic blends. I use a full‑synthetic 10W-30 because it handles both heat and cold well, and I’ve never had a leak or pressure drop.

From my experience, the real trade‑off is cost versus performance. 5W-30 synthetics are pricier, but they can improve cold‑start life and marginally boost horsepower at higher revs. If you’re on a budget and mostly ride in mild weather, a conventional 10W-30 does the job. Just make sure it meets API SL or higher specs for the PS4.

I had a friend who used a 0W-40 race oil in his PS4 for a season; it gave great protection on hot days but caused the oil filter to clog faster. The thicker oil didn’t flow as well at low temps, leading to a rough start and a bit of engine noise until it warmed up. Bottom line: stick close to the factory spec unless you have a specific need.
