I just installed a new 36-tooth front sprocket on my 2007 Polaris Ranger and kept the stock 18-tooth rear. The spec sheet says the gear ratio is now 40:1. I'm not sure how to interpret that number—does it mean the engine turns 40 times for each wheel revolution, or is it something else? I'm looking for a clear explanation and how it will affect my low‑speed torque and top speed.

The 40:1 figure is indeed the overall gear reduction from engine crankshaft to the rear wheel. Multiply the engine RPM by the ratio and you get wheel RPM. So at 3,000 rpm the wheel is only turning about 75 rpm, which gives you a lot of low‑end grunt but caps your top speed.
