I was reading through the service manual for my 2007 Polaris Sportsman 500 and came across the term 'MAP sensor' in the diagnostics section. I'm trying to figure out what it stands for and what it does exactly because my quad has been idling rough and stalling occasionally after it warms up. I've cleaned the carb and checked for vacuum leaks, but the problem persists. Could a faulty MAP sensor cause these symptoms? I'd appreciate any insight from those who've dealt with this before I start replacing parts blindly.

MAP stands for Manifold Absolute Pressure. It measures the pressure inside the intake manifold so the ECU can adjust fuel and timing. If yours is failing, it can definitely cause rough idle and stalling, especially once the engine reaches operating temp. I'd check for any stored codes first if your model has a diagnostic mode.

Had the same issue on my 2005 Sportsman 500. Turned out the MAP sensor vacuum line was cracked. It's a cheap rubber hose that hardens over time. Before buying a new sensor, inspect that line and the port on the intake. Saved me $100.

I disagree with just checking the hose. On these older Polaris models, the MAP sensor itself is known to fail after years of heat cycles. The diaphragm gets brittle. I replaced mine and it fixed the exact symptoms you described. Just make sure you get the OEM part, not an aftermarket one.

If you have a multimeter, you can backprobe the signal wire at idle. It should read around 1.5-2.0 volts with the engine at idle and around 4.5 volts at wide open throttle. If it's stuck at one value, the sensor is bad.

Don't forget to reset the ECU after replacing the sensor. Disconnect the battery for 15 minutes or pull the ECU fuse. Otherwise the old learned values can cause it to run poorly even with a new sensor. That got me once.

Before you buy anything, confirm that your model actually has a MAP sensor. Some Sportsman 500s from that era use a different system. Look at the service manual diagram to be sure. I've seen people buy parts they didn't need.
